In the Barrio del Carmen you will find one of the most unique corners of all of Ciutat Vella: the Casa Cerverita. Located in the Plaza de San Jaime, right in the middle of Caballeros Street, where two of the main arteries of the neighborhood begin: Calle Alta, on the left, and Calle Baja. strong>, on the right. The one on the right, as its name indicates, is one of the lowest places in the Carmen neighborhood. For this reason, when there have been floods (1517 or 1957) it has always been one of the places in the city where the water has caused the most damage.

They say that the only chocolate mill in Valencia existed on Alta Street in the 18th century and that it was called Alta del Alfondech because there was an alhóndiga or alfondega. The alhóndiga was a place to store and trade grain and cereals.

Baja Street also had different names over the centuries. In 1400 it was Teixidors Street, in 1500 it was Calderería Street and it was also known as Baja del Alfondech in the 19th century, although it was soon decided to shorten the name, leaving it as Baja.
